Meanwhile, Frances has personal troubles that she’s doing her best to weather. Her husband Peter is frequently absent from home because of late working hours at his factory, and it has understandably strained their marriage.

When the two women reach the vicarage, Steph spots a movement at the window and Sarah is forced to explain. Astounded by Sarah’s audacity and fearing for her friend’s safety, Steph promptly telephones Nick to inform him of the deserter’s location. Attempting to avoid further exposure, Sarah moves the deserter to the church. But as she leaves, Nick pulls up, outraged by her concealment of the truth and vowing that he will never trust her again.

While there, despite Frances’s express wish that he not be present, Peter’s illegitimate son Noah appears, dispelling by his striking resemblance to Peter any doubt about his parentage. Compounding the pain of seeing the physical result of Peter’s affair, Frances’s buy-out offer is refused.

I dislike the way it uses sitcom shortcuts en route to dramatic payoffs, which even when they work weigh down the jokes in turn. I dislike the way it can bait and switch the audience by bouncing back and forth between tones and modes at random. It would be over the top of me to say the whole thing feels like a cheat — who is being cheated, and at what? — but the inconsistency, the self-defeating nature of it all, makes it tough for me to enjoy.
She and Captain Novotny have been growing closer, and when the two secretly meet for a picnic he reveals his attraction to her, perspicaciously having inferred her unhappiness with her husband. Unfortunately, that husband has resurfaced, albeit in the hospital, having been injured by a stray artillery shell. Alison worries that her involvement with the Lyons could have dangerous consequences beyond just damaging her relationship with Frances. Once she freaks out and Ciara, Amanda, and Rachel interrogate her feelings a little bit more, Jess confesses that she does isolate herself with the guys and that she hasn’t given the girls a fair shot. Maybe she should think about her life choices if she is hearing this from multiple people. I’ve never had anyone tell me, to my face, they don’t want to be friends with me anymore — and I am an asshole. Are there dramatic moments that moved me, or comedic moments that made me laugh? Though a fight took place that Carver started with other people, the plan worked. He later told the trio that he would meet them at Molly’s the next day. What’s important is the not-knowing, and how Ethan’s mind fills in that blank. The real action of this plotline isn’t what happened, it’s what’s going on inside these characters’ minds and how these seeds of suspicion can do irreparable damage in the real world. The suspicion of an affair is confirmed when Frances receives the possessions her husband was carrying upon his death and finds a necklace and card meant for Helen. Still playing the dutiful wife, Pat visits Bob in the hospital and he characteristically scolds her for not bringing chocolate – a treat she shared with Captain Novotny, not that Bob knows.
But after having to recuse herself from the Campbell’s CPR training so that she does not have to go mouth-to-mouth with other women, she decides to commit. She appears at Nick’s base, apologizes, and ardently kisses him. The wing commander has women – or at least, a woman – on his mind right now. Having been charmed by Teresa at the Czechs’ gathering, he has asked her on a date. The couple spends a lovely afternoon in the countryside, watching a paratrooper training exercise from the vantage point of a hill.
